The #LightUpMBC campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research to benefit METAvivor Research and Support Inc.
Held annually in October, #LightUpMBC creates significant impact on October 13, which is federally recognized as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, by partnering with hundreds of iconic landmark partners around the world to illuminate in solidarity in the MBC awareness ribbon colors of green, teal and pink. By uniting patients, families and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients. This culminates with #LightUpMBC Live a virtual broadcast featuring inspirational patient stories from illuminated landmarks.
To give the MBC Community more time with their loved ones by shining a light on the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
To empower and advocate for the MBC community, funding vital research with the hope of transforming MBC into a survivable illness rather than a life-threatening disease.
#LightUpMBC was created in honor and loving memory of Jessica Moore (pictured). Jessica was loved by all who knew her, she loved her family deeply, and always found something to be grateful for. She embodied the word 'care' and dedicated her life as a nurse to helping others and was even recognized as "Caregiver of the Year" by the organization that she worked for. At the age of 32, she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and passed away from the disease less than 4 years later. She lived by the motto: "Quitting is not an option."
Jessica was a strong advocate and wanted to bring attention to the lack of funding the disease receives. She wished to have a local landmark lit for MBC to shine a light on the need for MBC awareness & research. In October of 2017, five months after her passing, the first bridge to light as part of #LightUpMBC was the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, NH near her hometown (pictured in the banner above - photo taken by Shawn Pierce|studiotwosevennine.com)
Our leadership team is small but mighty, and we are passionate about raising awareness and funding for MBC. In fact, alongside our all-volunteer team of #LightUpMBC ambassadors, we have created a global movement and raised over $2M for MBC research.
We have all been impacted by MBC in some way whether that be losing a loved one to the disease, supporting family members living with the disease, or living with the disease directly. We advocate to educate because often people are under the impression there is a cure for breast cancer when there is not, also there is a lack of understanding very little funding raised for breast cancer is put toward an actual cure.
